About Orvieto
The Umbria Writing & Publishing Workshop is held in the beautiful Umbrian hill town of Orvieto. Orvieto (population 20,000) began as a major Etruscan settlement built high on a mesa of volcanic stone. It became a Roman city in the 3rd century BC and, into the Middle Ages, fortifications were built to protect the road between Rome and Florence. In 1527 Pope Clement VII escaped the Sack of Rome, fleeing the city disguised as a gardener and taking shelter in Orvieto, an impregnable city, behind the reach of the Holy Roman Emperor. Orvieto still retains its medieval character, and boasts one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in Italy. Full of underground caves, beautiful art, marvelous food, and friendly people, Orvieto is an ideal place to visit, and a perfect point of departure for day trips to Rome and throughout Umbria.
The structure of this workshop, with class held from 2-6:30pm, leaves participants with mornings and evenings free to write, explore, or just relax.
